Cupping is a great modality to work with because it extremely effective in releasing muscle and fascial restrictions in a short amount of time. With static cupping, plastic or silicone vacuum cups are placed on the body for 5-15 minutes. Sliding cupping may also be incorporated, and I fondly call this "vacuuming the muscles." Static cupping may leave marks, but these usully fade within 3-7 days. Sliding cupping typically does not leave marks, but there may be some redness for a brief time after treatment. We are a huge fan of cupping at Boston Massage and Bodywork!
Myofascial release is a slow, deliberate type of massage therapy that targets the connective tissue known as fascia which lies in-between the skin and muscles. This modality is deeply therapeutic and uses little to no lubricant. Although intense at times, myofascial release is also relaxing, and penetrates deep into the body. If you love deep tissue, you must try myofascial release!
Deep Tissue Massage reaches deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue called fascia. This type of massage therapy is used to break down tissue adhesions and relieve pressure points throughout the body. Deep tissue is beneficial for athletes and those who sit for long periods of time. This type of work can be more intense, but should never be painful. Deep tissue can also be combined with sports massage to incorporate range of motion movements and stretching.
Sports massage is a faster paced style of massage therapy indicated for those preparing for an event or recovering from one. The goal is to stimulate the muscle tissue to prepare it for action, and to help facilitate blood and lymph flow which aids in muscle repair. Active and passive stretching may be used and feedback from client is essential. Sports massage can be beneficial for most people, not just athletes. Sports massage can be combined with Deep Tissue or Myofascial release to deeply penetrate the muscles and connective tissues.
Swedish massage is the original version of massage therapy. The goal of Swedish Massage is to melt away muscle tension and promote relaxation. With slow deliberate strokes, this technique is perfect for those seeking refuge from today's stressful and hectic world. Don't be surprised if you fall asleep on the table! A great modality to find a peaceful refuge from hectic Boston city life.
Prenatal massage focuses on addressing the special needs of those expecting a chid. Comfortable pillows, bolsters, and side-lying postures are used to prevent putting pressure on the abdomen. This is a relaxing and rejuvenating massage, most clients fall asleep and leave feeling refreshed.
