Tui Na (pronounced twee-nah) is a therapeutic form of Chinese medical bodywork that has been practiced for thousands of years. Using a combination of rhythmic pressure, joint mobilization, stretching, and specialized hand techniques, Tui Na works to restore the body's natural balance by improving the flow of Qi (energy) and blood. It can be an effective treatment for neck and back pain, headaches, sciatica, joint pain, sports injuries, muscle tension, TMJ dysfunction, stress-related conditions, digestive concerns, and other musculoskeletal and internal medicine complaints. Treatments may be used on their own or integrated with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for a comprehensive approach to healing.
While Tui Na shares some techniques with massage therapy, its purpose and approach are fundamentally different. Rather than focusing primarily on relaxation or muscle tension, Tui Na is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine that evaluates and treats underlying patterns of imbalance affecting the body's channels and organ systems. Each treatment is tailored to the individual using a Chinese medicine diagnosis and may incorporate acupressure, channel therapy, mobilization, and therapeutic exercises to address the root cause of pain or dysfunction. With a history spanning more than 2,000 years, Tui Na remains one of the oldest continuously practiced manual therapies in the world and is an integral part of Chinese medical care alongside acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy.
Tui Na treatments at Boston Massage and Bodywork are provided by Keli Lemoi, DAcCHM, LAc, LMT, Dipl. AHM (NCCAOM). With over a decade of experience as a licensed massage therapist and advanced training in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, Keli combines a deep understanding of anatomy, movement, and Traditional Chinese Medicine to deliver personalized, evidence-informed care. Her approach integrates orthopedic assessment with classical Chinese medical principles to identify and treat the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction rather than simply managing symptoms.
Keli has extensive experience treating musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries, repetitive strain conditions, headaches, TMJ dysfunction, and stress-related disorders. She believes patient education is an essential part of the healing process and works collaboratively with each individual to develop a treatment plan that includes hands-on therapy, lifestyle recommendations, and self-care strategies to help patients move better, feel better, and achieve lasting results.
What is Tui Na?
Tui Na is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) bodywork that uses specialized manual techniques to relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore balance within the body's channels and organ systems. Unlike relaxation massage, Tui Na is performed with a specific therapeutic goal based on a Chinese medicine assessment.
What conditions can Tui Na help treat?
Tui Na is commonly used for neck and back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, headaches, TMJ dysfunction, sports injuries, muscle strains, tendonitis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, repetitive strain injuries, and joint stiffness. It may also support stress reduction, digestive concerns, and certain chronic conditions when incorporated into a comprehensive treatment plan.
Do I have to remove my clothing?
No. Tui Na is typically performed fully clothed. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows for movement. Unlike traditional massage, oils or lotions are generally not used.
Does Tui Na hurt?
Treatment intensity varies depending on your condition and treatment goals. Some techniques involve deep pressure or stretching and may feel intense but should remain within your comfort level. Your treatment is always adjusted to your tolerance and preferences.
How is Tui Na different from massage therapy?
While massage therapy often focuses on relaxation or soft tissue tension, Tui Na is a medical therapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It incorporates acupressure, joint mobilization, stretching, and channel-based techniques to address the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction rather than simply relieving symptoms.
Can Tui Na be combined with acupuncture?
Absolutely. Tui Na and acupuncture complement each other exceptionally well. Depending on your condition, your practitioner may recommend combining the two therapies to improve pain relief, restore movement, and enhance overall treatment outcomes.
How long is a Tui Na session?
Sessions are available in 45, 60, and 90-minute appointments. The appropriate length depends on your condition, treatment goals, and whether Tui Na is combined with acupuncture or other therapies.
How many treatments will I need?
Every patient responds differently. Acute conditions may improve in just a few visits, while chronic or longstanding issues often benefit from a series of treatments. During your initial visit, your practitioner will discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Is Tui Na relaxing?
Many patients find Tui Na deeply relaxing, but its primary purpose is therapeutic. Depending on your condition, treatments may be vigorous and movement-oriented or gentle and calming.
Is Tui Na safe?
When performed by a licensed practitioner, Tui Na is a safe and effective therapy for many conditions. Your medical history and current health will be reviewed to ensure treatment is appropriate for you.
